I don’t tell her to go. I fucking should, but I don’t. Over the next twenty-four hours Natalie cleans my house and cooks up almost all my food, ensuring we’ll leave nothing behind. When it comes to mountain living, I’m surprised to discover she’s a natural. Her body heals like a champ. She finds ways to pass the time, reading and cooking and taking short walks in the area I specified as safe to roam. She doesn’t seem to miss technology—except her camera.
After lunch, when she’s good and distracted with a book, I finagle her camera’s memory card out of the busted port. It’s a long shot but I’m willing to try, and at this rate we might actually run out of food before it’s time to leave. I tuck the disk into my pocket, pull up my bootstraps, and grab my coat.
“I’ll be back in a couple hours. Stay here.” I wait for an objection that doesn’t come.
“Mm,” she hums, never lifting her eyes off the paperback.
Downtown Stanbery isn’t too far, about thirty-five minutes. I stop at the big electronics and hobby store first. They don’t sell the same camera Natalie had; the closest thing is twenty-five hundred dollars. I gape at the price but I can afford it, and hell, she’s worth it. What else am I going to spend it on, anyhow? The best part is it takes the same kind of memory card as the one I have with me, which magically isn’t ruined, so she can view her pictures right away.
I flip through a few of them on the new device. Looking at the photos is like seeing through Natalie’s eyes, and I’m impressed. How she finds the small, extraordinary detail in big, ordinary things. Zooms in on them.
I still for a second when I get to a shot of my front porch. One lonesome rocking chair. I never even realized it’s off-center. As if I planned to set another beside it someday. On my way to the front of the store I pass a bunch of outdoor furniture, and shake my head at the ludicrous thought that comes. I’ve known the girl for two days. I’m not about to buy furniture for her.
Then I pass the large glass jewelry case, and my gaze goes rogue a beat longer. Any one of those diamond rings would look stunning on Nat’s finger. But especially…that one.
On my way back home I stop for some groceries, then pull into a coffee stand for a French roast and a White Sawtooth Latte for her. I don’t know if it’s her kind of drink, but girls around here go nuts over it.
I find Natalie in the same spot I left her, curled up on the couch with a book. At some point she must’ve gotten up because she’s wearing another one of my shirts, and something in the kitchen smells good.
“You’re home.” She smiles, brightening even more when she spies the to-go cup. “Coffee?”
“Little something to warm you up.” I hand it to her.
